I saw a photograph at Newlyn Art Gallery a few years ago of the inside of an abandoned whaling station, a cavernous tin factory style building with the rotting corpse of a reindeer hanging, caught by his beautiful antlers in huge chains that must have been used to haul in the bodies of the slaughtered whales for 'processing'. It was a profoundly moving , haunting compelling image and I think about that stag often and the whales too. So I made this painting of him encircled and acknowledged, his spirit being set free from that dark place.
